Replacement Theology is wrong

Replacement theology—the teaching that the Church has replaced Israel because of its rejection of Jesus—continues to be taught in churches throughout the world. Not long ago, America’s United Methodist Church made this statement: “When Christians stop supporting Israel and impose an economic boycott on Judaism and the Jews, who are denying Christ, the Jews will accept Jesus Christ.”

This anti-Semitic logic makes a mockery of history and denigrates the Word of God. Over the centuries, the Jewish people have suffered unspeakable persecution in the name of Christianity. The Crusaders (11th–13th centuries) pillaged and robbed the Jews, and when they refused to convert, they murdered them in the name of the One who was crucified.

During the Spanish Inquisition (1478–1834), the Church confiscated all of the Jews’ possessions. They were forced to be baptized and later tortured and burned alive as marranos (pigs, a derogatory designation for Spanish Jews who “converted” to Catholicism while secretly practicing their Jewish faith).

Replacement theology was at the root of all these movements. And though persecution of Jewish populations occurred in different countries and different time periods, one common tactic was fostering severe economic hardship to coerce the Jews into converting to Christianity.

Adolf Hitler began his mission to annihilate the Jews by bringing them to their knees economically. After Kristallnacht (the Night of Broken Glass) in Germany in 1938, when synagogues were burned down and Jewish shops and businesses ransacked, the Jews were ordered to pay exhorbitant fines, while the German people were told, “Don’t buy from the Jews!” Afterward came the systematic starvation, torture and murder of 6 million Jews.

Against this background, the renewed call for an economic boycott of Israel by the Presbyterian Church (August 2004), Episcopal Church (November 2004), and United Methodist Church (July 2005) has demonic roots. Yet the people who are advocating the boycott probably don’t understand the implications of their actions. It seems that they are under “a deluding influence so that they might believe what is false” (2 Thess. 2:11).
